34. CORNEILLE (Pierre). Theater, with comments [by VOLTAIRE] - Lot 34
34. CORNEILLE (Pierre). Theater, with comments [by VOLTAIRE]. S.l.n.n. (Geneva, Cramer frères), 1764. 12 volumes in-8, slightly later tan basane, smooth spine decorated, t.d. and tom. Gilt roulette on the sides and on the edges. Jaspered edges. 1 frontispiece engraved by Watelet and 34 figures by Gravelot engraved by various artists. Beautiful edition that Voltaire had printed by subscription at the Cramer brothers in Geneva, accompanied by comments in order to endow a descendant of the great Corneille that he had collected. All Europe took part in it. The main defect of this edition, quite beautiful but lacking in correctness, is that almost all the copies are browned and stained with freckles. The figures, without being Gravelot's best, are not without merit, especially the one of the comedies, Cohen tells us. At the end there is a table of subscribers as well as a general table of contents handwritten on the last blank page. Binding a little rubbed, some foxing and browned leaves. (Cohen, I, 255)
