45. FENELON (F. de Salignac de La Motte). The adventures of - Lot 45
45. FENELON (F. de Salignac de La Motte). The adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulysses. Printed by order of the King for the education of Monseigneur le Dauphin. Paris, de l'Imprimerie de Didot l'aîné, 1784. 2 vol. in-8, [6] f., 453 p. 2 vols. in-8, [6] f., 453 p. + [2] f., 438 p., [1] f., glazed fawn calf, spine with ornamented nerves, title and tomato parts in garnet and black morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, roulette on the edges, red edges. In 1783, François-Ambroise Didot wished to publish a new collection of French and Latin classical authors that would be fair and refined. He had the idea to ask the king's permission to write "imprimé par ordre du Roi pour l'éducation de Monseigneur le Dauphin" on the title page of each work. One can see at the beginning of each work the Patent obtained which implies that Didot answers a royal order and which allows Didot to print all the desired works, the only reserve being to make it with characters and French paper and in 3 formats. The Adventures of Telemachus is the first title of the "Collection du Dauphin". The edition in-8° is drawn to 350 copies on vellum and composed with the new characters of the foundry of Didot the elder. 32 titles will appear. (Brunet, II, 1215; Cohen, I, 389-390). Attached : OVIDE. P. Ovidii Nasonis Opera Quae Supersunt. Paris, Barbou, 1762. 3 volumes in-12, marbled glazed calf, all edges gilt. Frontispiece after Eisen, different in each of the three volumes.
