52. GERSON (John) [Thomas a Kempis]. De Imitatione Christi. - Lot 52
52. GERSON (John) [Thomas a Kempis]. De Imitatione Christi. Paris. P. Pigouchet, 1492. In-8 gothic, [2] f. v., [96]. f. n.c., [2] f. v., long-grained navy morocco, spine ornamented, boards decorated with a rich frame of gilt fillets and irons, guilloche edges, inner lace, gilt edges (Bauzonnet-Furgold). Beautiful incunabulum of the Imitation of Christ, here attributed to Jean Gerson, issued from the Parisian presses of Philippe Pigouchet (c. 1460-c. 1518) at 31 lines per page. It opens with a title page illustrated with an anonymous woodcut depicting Christ in majesty, slightly shorter, which is not the expected title page (it probably replaces the missing title). Very nice watermarked initial in blue and red on the first leaf of the text, followed by numerous painted initials and flyswatters. Handwritten bookplate of Henri Toubilly on the title page. Binding very slightly rubbed, ink stains washed out on f. l5, top margin a little short, title page reported, other defects are minor. (De Backer, Essai bib. de Imit. Christi, 41; Hain, 9104).
