61. [HONORED OF AUTUN]. The Lucidayre, in the present book n - Lot 61
61. [HONORED OF AUTUN]. The Lucidayre, in the present book named above is contained various subtle and marvelous matters of interrogation. Lyon, C. Nourry, 1506. In-4 gothic, [23] f. n.c. (out of 24), half-hardback vellum with smooth spine, calligraphic title on spine. Rare copy of the Lucidaire, a kind of dialogue between an old master and his young disciple on questions that are at first of a divine nature but that quickly drift towards questions related to the existence of goblins, goblins, creatures of the devil, witches, the power of dreams, visions, etc. The master, who until then had been answering questions about the existence of these creatures, was not able to answer. The master, who until then answered rather laconically, now allows himself much longer explanations which are a descriptive delight of the popular beliefs of the time. The Lyon printer Claude Nourry (circa 1470-1533) gave his preference to popular works or works of chivalry; he was also the publisher of Rabelais. Post-incunabula work composed in a beautiful gothic typography on 33 lines per page, title page in black and red, two woodcuts and two ornamented lettering. Missing leaf C3, a tiny pinprick across the quires, some foxing, marginal notes and other minor defects. This copy was listed in the catalog of the Bachelin-Deflorenne bookstore in 1869, the missing leaf was already reported. According to a handwritten note, the same copy would have appeared in the catalog of Marc Loliée in 1949, n° 73. A page from another catalog has been inserted between the first endpapers. (Baudrier, XII, 106; Graesse, IV, 225 & Brunet, III, 1214 describe it without date)
