95. RAYNAL (Guillaume-Thomas). A philosophical and political - Lot 95
95. RAYNAL (Guillaume-Thomas). A philosophical and political history of the establishments and trade of the Europeans in the two Indies. Genève, chez les libraires associés, 1775. 3 volumes in-4, fawn calf, spines decorated, triple gilt fillet on the boards. First edition in-4 of this reference work on the colonial world at the age of Enlightenment and breviary of anticolonialism, illustrated with a portrait of the author engraved by Louis Legrand (1723-1807) after Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790), 7 unsigned plates out of text, 4 watercolored and folded maps and 3 vignettes by Marillier. Feugère speaks very highly of this edition: "The characters of [this edition compared to the following ones] are sharper and more beautiful; the prints more numerous and more carefully executed, as well as the vignettes and the fleurons. At the top of each page, on the front, is indicated the number of the book to which the page belongs. But what makes it especially valuable is that it contains the passages of the original text modified in 1774." Overall condition is fair, bindings a bit rubbed, corners dulled, a few pages browned and others haloed, other minor defects. (Cohen, 854; Feugère, 40).
