118. BELON (Pierre). Portraits of birds, animals, serpents, herbs, trees, men and women of Arabia and Egypt: the whole enriched with quatrains, for easier cognition of birds and other portraits. Paris, G. Cavellat, 1557. In-4, [10] f., 110 f. (of 122), soft vellum. A rare copy of the ornithological and naturalist treatise by Pierre Belon (1517-1564), one of the most famous scientists of the 16th century along with the Swiss Conrad Gessner. The remarkable number of animal engravings (190 in this copy, including 159 of birds) based on Belon's own observations, make this a valuable reference work. "Curious, sought-after and uncommon collection" says Brunet. Copy in bad condition, important lack of vellum on the cover, title page with traces and lacks, angular lacks on the introductory leaves up to leaf 16, leaves 21, 22, 69, 73, 87, 110, 111, 117, 119, 120, 121 and 122 are missing, also the leaf of the two maps and that of the privilege at the end, leaves 5, 63, 71, 89, 103 have tears on the printed part but without loss, leaves 28, 40, 57 and 109 have a lack of on the printed part, several bird beaks enhanced with a red pencil line, the leaves have freckles, traces, or other minor defects.
