121 [Surgery]. Memoirs of the Royal Academy of Surgery. Paris, Osmont Delaguette, Le Prieur and Didot. 1743-74. 5 vol. in-4, in homogeneous contemporary bindings, with the exception of volume 4, which has very slightly different fleurons. Marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed, title and giblets.
First edition in five volumes in-4 of this important publication, illustrated with a frontispiece by Cochin (the same) in 4 volumes and 88 plates, most of them folding.
Since its creation in 1731, the Académie Nationale de Chirurgie has published the texts of the papers presented at its forum. It is the oldest specific publication on surgery in the world. This was the case successively under the name of Mémoires de l'Académie Royale de chirurgie (1743-1774), then Bulletins et Mémoires de la Société de Chirurgie de Paris (1848-1923), etc.
Among them we find : précis of various observations on the Trepan, précis of observations on exfoliations of the bones of the skull, remarks on wounds of the brain, instruments or machines approved by the Academy, observations on the torn leg, continuation of essays on effusions by fire, description of a machine to stop the blood of the intercostal artery, observations on the wounds of firearms, on the good effects of artificial muds, urine rendered by the navel, on the term of fertilization of women, memoir with a précis of several observations on cancer, memoir on the treatment of gunshot wounds, memoir on the operation of the cleft lip, memoir on the fungal tumors of the dura mater, memoir on several diseases of the eyeball, etc.
Bindings rubbed, headpieces damaged, one part of the spine cracked.
