282. GUILLONNET (Octave-Denis-Victor, ill.) & LORRAIN (Jean) - Lot 282
282. GUILLONNET (Octave-Denis-Victor, ill.) & LORRAIN (Jean). Narkiss. Paris, Edition du Monument, 1908. Green morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated with an orientalist mosaic composition, gilt head, original illustrated cover kept (Bernard David). Edition limited to a small edition of 300 numbered copies, this one being one of the 50 numbered first copies on japan, reserved for the publisher François Ferroud (who left his initials under the justification) and which contains two states of the compositions, one in green, one in bistre. The copy also contains the subscription leaflet bound at the end. The text is printed in a golden frame evoking Egypt. In this tale first published in the press in 1892, Jean Lorrain transposes the myth of Narcissus in Egypt. Passed relatively unnoticed, the tale which was dedicated to René Lalique is republished here by the friends of Jean Lorrain. The text is illustrated with 3 hors-texte compositions and 10 vignettes, strongly inspired by Orientalism, by the painter and decorator Octave Denis Victor Guillonnet (1872-1967) and engraved by Le Sueur. Leather slightly rubbed, other defects are minor. (Monod, 7292).
