393. JULLIAN (Camille). History of Bordeaux from its origins - Lot 393
393. JULLIAN (Camille). History of Bordeaux from its origins to 1895. Bordeaux, Féret, 1895. In-4, 804 p. illustrated with 32 plates or maps. Bound in vellum, smooth spine decorated with a finely executed ink drawing of Pey Berland Cathedral, author and title in calligraphy in ink. The upper board is decorated with the arms of the city of Bordeaux supported by two white antelopes, drawing executed in ink. Case in poor condition requiring repair. A well-bound copy of the first edition of this monumental and inescapable history, illustrated with 235 engravings and 32 hors-texte plates. If this great work was written very quickly, it is nonetheless the matured fruit of ten years of research and teaching: "unique book by the clarity of the exposition, the richness of the insights, the purity of the language and the vigor of the style" says Gabriel Loirette.
