396. MARIONNEAU (Charles). Victor Louis architect of the the - Lot 396
396. MARIONNEAU (Charles). Victor Louis architect of the theater of Bordeaux. Bordeaux, Gounouilhou 1881. In-8, 591 pp. Flamed tan basane, spine with gold titling, covers. Portrait in frontispiece, facsimile and engravings. During his lifetime, Victor Louis did not know the glory to which to which his monumental theater should have destined him and the biography that Gaullieur L'Hardy gave in 1828 was as late as legendary. To do justice to his art, Charles Marionneau (1823-1896) spent twenty years gathering documentation on Victor Louis and we owe him, among other things, the discovery of a voluminous correspondence in the archives of the Intendance of Guyenne. Here he devotes his most beautiful biography to the architect and reveals many forgotten details. Thus the laying of the foundation stone took place on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Orleans during the Masonic celebration of the lodge that Louis attended. The Freemasons organized some pomp and circumstance and a formidable fireworks display was fired, but in reality, this "first stone" was entirely symbolic: the work was so advanced that the ornamentation was already being taken care of.
