397. MARQUESSAC (Baron Henri de). Hospitallers of St. John o - Lot 397
397. MARQUESSAC (Baron Henri de). Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem in Guyenne from the 12th century to 1793. Preceptories, commanderies and other possessions of the order. Bordeaux, Justin Dupuy, 1866. Large in-4 bound in fir green half-chagrin. Spine with very ornate faux-nerves. Title in gold. Boards decorated with a cold decoration. Top board stamped in gold with the author's name and title surmounted by a Templar cross, gilt head, ix, 292 p., pl. First edition of this remarkable archaeological and historical work on the commanderies of the Gironde illustrated with 50 plates out of text and some engravings in the text. Baron Marie Urbain Henri de Marquessac (1832-1870) shows himself here to be both an accomplished artist mastering etching, like his contemporary Leo Drouyn, and a conscientious historian. This work has become uncommonly complete with its plates. A few minor foxing, otherwise a fine copy with large margins.
