William Adolphe BOUGUEREAU (1825 - 1905) - Lot 241
William Adolphe BOUGUEREAU (1825 - 1905) Roman Scene, 1855 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 110 x 81,5 cm (Shrinkage of the material mainly in the red of the woman's tunic, some restorations) Provenance: - Purchased directly from the artist by the Sainte-Affrique family - By descent to the current owners Bibliography: - William Bouguereau - Catalogue raisonné of his Painted Work by Damien Bartoli and Frederick C. Ross, Antique Collectors Club, 2010, described and reproduced on page 43 as #1855/08 Bouguereau made numerous studies for this painting, including a very accomplished one of the man sitting in the foreground. It is most certainly a studio work, the father in the foreground is in the exact same position as in our painting, only the stone band at the entrance has been replaced by a stool and a drape has been added to cover the model's nudity. There is also a watercolor that exactly reproduces our painting. Experts Amaury de Louvencourt & Agnès Sevestre Barbé Visible at their office, by appointment, until March 10
