17. BLOY (Léon). Le Désespéré. Paris, A. Soirat, 1886 (1887) - Lot 17
17. BLOY (Léon). Le Désespéré. Paris, A. Soirat, 1886 (1887). Black half-chagrin with corners, gilt head, gold cover. Copy of the EO of the autobiographical novel by Léon Bloy (1846-1917) which was completed in 1886 (date on the title). There was no large paper. The key work was to have been published by Tresse et Stock, which printed as Bloy's sheets arrived, but this publisher became frightened when reading certain passages. As Bloy refused to modify them, the publisher sequestered the printed sheets. Alphonse Soirat came to Bloy's rescue, had the whole work and the remaining leaves quickly recomposed (by a printer who wished to remain anonymous) and the work was put on sale on January 15, 1887 (date on the cover with the mention of the 2nd thousand).
Small losses of paper to the preserved cover, mentions in pencil on the title page.
Attached:

Good condition overall, some pencil inscriptions.
