19. BOSCOVICH (Roger-Joseph). The Eclipses, poem in six song - Lot 19
19. BOSCOVICH (Roger-Joseph). The Eclipses, poem in six songs dedicated to his majesty. Paris, Valade & Laporte, 1779. In-4, xxxii, 540 p., [1] f., marbled fawn calf, spine ornamented. Original French edition with translation by Augustin Barruel (1741-1820) opposite the Latin text by the famous mathematician and astronomer Ruđer Josip Bošković (1711-1787), for whom a crater on the moon now bears his name. By subtly blending poetic evocations and scientific accuracies, Bošković shows how much poetry and wonder the rationality of the exact sciences contains within it, a path that modern publishing still takes today. Provenance: a member of the Journu family, famous shipowners from Bordeaux, attested by the armorial drystamp with the motto "Vigilens & Fidelis" on the title page. Binding rubbed, splitting of the spine, missing headpieces, some foxing. (Brunet, I, 1124; Graesse, I, 500).
