20. BRANTOME (Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de). Set of 6 v - Lot 20
20. BRANTOME (Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de). Set of 6 volumes in-12 bound identically, fawn basane, spine with decorated nerves: Memoirs containing the anecdotes of the court of France under the kings Henri II, François II, Henri III and Henri IV, concerning duels. Leiden, J. Sambix, 1722. His opuscules, and the maxims of war by André de Bourdeilles, his elder brother. The last three volumes are volumes of the complete works but without the indicative spine cap. Provenance: the playwright, storyteller and jurist Thomas-Simon Gueullette (1683-1766), attested by his unusual bookplate pasted to the reverse of the upper cover of each volume. This ex-libris designed and engraved by H. Bécat represents a complex armorial allegory. Poulet-Malassis underlines that Thomas-Simon Gueullette is "the first, perhaps the only man of letters, who had the idea of making his ex-libris an allegory of all his literary productions". Bindings a little rubbed with slight lacks of leather, the other defects are minor.
