23. BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc de). Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du roy. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1749-1771. 17 volumes in-4, marbled fawn calf, spines decorated. The first 17 volumes of the original in-4 edition of Buffon's Natural History, i.e. the Theory of the Earth (4 plates), the Natural History of Man and Animals (8 plates), the description of the King's Cabinet (17 plates), the domestic animals (23 plates + 53 plates), the cat and wild animals (57 plates), the carnivorous animals (48 plates) and the first 2 volumes of the birds.
The whole is in average condition: the bindings are rubbed with worn corners, large spalls, missing headpieces, a small lack on 2 plates, large freckling on 5 plates, sometimes light halos and other minor defects.
Also included: Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, servant de suite à la théorie de la terre & d'introduction à l'histoire des minéraux. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1774. In-4, marbled fawn calf, spine with ornate nerves. Illustrated with an engraved portrait of Buffon in frontispiece and 16 plates out of text.
