42. COURT DE GEBELIN (Antoine). Primitive world, analised an - Lot 42
42. COURT DE GEBELIN (Antoine). Primitive world, analised and compared with the modern world, considered in the natural history of speech or universal and comparative grammar. Paris, Durand, 1787. 9 volumes in-4, marbled fawn calf, spines decorated, triple gilt fillet on the boards, red and green morocco title-pieces. The text is illustrated with 4 frontispieces and numerous vignettes by Clément-Pierre Marillier (1740-1808) and Claude Bornet (1733 - 1804), as well as 44 hors-texte plates (ancient alphabets, ancient coins, tarot cards, 2 folded maps of Italy and the Assyrian Empire, etc.). Monumental unfinished essay by the pastor and freemason Antoine Court de Gébelin (1728-1784). The first volume is devoted to ancient mythology whose occult meaning can be explained by allegory. This allegory could be decoded by the primitive language that Court de Gébelin tries to restore by going back to the sources of our current languages. This is the universal and comparative grammar of the second volume. The third volume (Histoire naturelle de la parole), considers the vowels as representing the sensations, and the consonants the ideas. The fourth volume is a history of the calendar, the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth volumes are etymological dictionaries of Greek, Latin and French languages. The eighth volume deciphers the esoteric symbols of the coat of arms, the currency and the games, including the tarot divinatory. The bindings are worn and damaged with epidermises, dents, snags and small leather chips, dull and sometimes trimmed corners, split jaws, old repairs on two endpapers, rare foxing and other minor defects.
