61. ESTIENNE (Henri). The introduction to the treaty of the - Lot 61
61. ESTIENNE (Henri). The introduction to the treaty of the conformity of the ancient wonders with the modern ones or preparatory treaty to the Apology for Herodotus. Geneva, s.n. (P. Chouët), 1566. In-8, [35] f., 680 p., marbled brown basane, spine with ornamented nerves, gilt roulette on the edges and the endpapers. Remarkable work of scholarship by the humanist Henri Estienne (1528-1598), which is also a monument of French prose and of the satirical genre, as well as an attack in good standing on Roman Catholicism and on the society of the sixteenth century, under the pretext of a defense of Herodotus. As soon as it left the presses, the book was censored by the Council of Geneva, which condemned Estienne to be burned in effigy in the Place de Grève. In order to avoid again the narrow-minded censorship of his time, Estienne agreed to modify 56 litigious pages of his book, particularly in chapter XXI dealing with lechery and the bawdiness of the church people, but some copies had already been sent and sold in Lyon (today sought after by rare book lovers). This one, a copy of the censored text, without the warning. Spine a little worn, generalized foxing throughout the book. (Boudou, 3b for this exact edition, Adams, 1771 for the same edition but published by Estienne; Jostock, 400 for the censorship notice).
