62. [EULER (Leonhard). Letters to a German princess on various subjects of physics and philosophy. Berne, Société Typographique, 1778. 3 volumes in-8 with 19 folded plates, half vellum, author's name and title calligraphed on the spine of the volumes. This work was first published in St-Petersburg in 1768-1772. It contains the interviews of Leonhard Euler, an eminent physicist and mathematician of the 18th century, with the princess of Anhalt-Dessau, whose teacher he had accepted. The princess was the niece of Frederick II. This book contains publications by Euler on various subjects related to physics and mathematics, but also to philosophy. The book was a huge bestseller. Its popularity testifies to Euler's pedagogical skills and his ability to communicate simply about scientific issues. The work is illustrated with 19 folding plates with numerous figures.
