66. [GALIANI (Ferdinando). Dialogue on the Trade of Bleds. L - Lot 66
66. [GALIANI (Ferdinando). Dialogue on the Trade of Bleds. London [Paris], s.n. [Merlin], 1770. In-8, 314 p., [1] f. (errata), marbled basane, spine decorated with iron bird. First edition of this treatise by the Italian economist Ferdinando Galiani (1728-1787) published anonymously by Denis Diderot. Written in French on the occasion of the royal edict deregulating the grain trade, allowing free export, the work is considered a cornerstone of liberal criticism. Indeed, the liberalization of trade led very early to a lucrative speculative activity creating an inflation on the first necessity goods. In the form of a dialogue, Galiani denounces a liberal bourgeoisie getting rich without effort by starving the people.
Provenance: Jules Bobin at the date of 1863, most probably the bibliophile and friend of Huysmans, attested by a handwritten bookplate. With the same handwriting, there is a handwritten leaf stuck to the back cover which is an extract of a letter from Turgot to Mademoiselle de Lespinasse in which he gives a critical opinion on the work.
Corners dulled, minor defects, a good copy.
