70 GESSNER (Salomon). Death of Abel. - Lot 70
70 GESSNER (Salomon). Death of Abel.
Poem by Gessner, translated by Hubert. Edition decorated with prints printed in color, after the drawings of M. Monsiau, painter of the Academy.
Paris, Defer de Maisonneuve, 1793. Large in-4, 161 pages illustrated with a frontispiece and 5 color plates engraved in dotted line by Colibert, Casenave and Clément after Nicolas-André Monsiau (1754-1837). Later binding (second half of the 19th century) in half morocco basane with corners, spine with ornate nerves.
First printing of the illustrations.
Considered as an example of successful color engraved illustration, this edition takes its place alongside the other successful editions published at the same time by Defer de Maisonneuve. The dotted engraving style used by Nicolas Colibert allows to render the tones by juxtaposing numerous dots obtained with a roulette or a burin (see Milton's work at number 108 of the catalog, whose illustration benefited from the same process).
A copy with large margins. Leather of the binding worn, with a slight skinning. Some foxing, more important on the frontispiece.
(Cohen, 436; Monglond, II, col. 1021)
