72. HEISTER (Lorenz). Institutions de chirurgie, où l'on traite dans un ordre clair et nouveau de tout ce qui a rapport à cet art, work of nearly forty years. Avignon, J.J. Niel, 1770-1773. 5 vols. in-8 marbled basane, spine with ornamented nerves. First edition of the French translation on Latin of the German anatomist, botanist and surgeon Lorenz Heister (1683-1758) by François Paul (1731-1774). Heister's text is illustrated with 41 plates depicting various medical instruments or operating procedures. Volume V, published in 1773, is entirely by Paul: Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de la Chirurgie au XVIIIe siècle.
Provenance: Jean-Marie-Alexandre Costes (1794-1868), professor of external pathology at the Preparatory School of Medicine in Bordeaux, attested by an ex-dono for the Faculty of Medicine, printed and pasted on the reverse of the upper cover of each volume.
Bindings rubbed with small losses of leather, one headband missing, title pieces missing, labels stuck to spine, institutional stamps, worm bite to volume I, other small defects.
