78. LACOUR (Pierre). Æloïm ou les dieux de Moïse. Bordeaux, - Lot 78
78. LACOUR (Pierre). Æloïm ou les dieux de Moïse. Bordeaux, J. Teycheney, 1839. 2 vols. in-8, xxxiv, 336 p.; iv, 401 p., [3] p., pl., paperback with printed cover. Uncommon esoteric work, "very rare" according to Dorbon of the painter, engraver, archaeologist, philologist and literary scholar from Bordeaux Pierre Lacour (1778-1859). The work is on the list of works condemned by the Congregation of the Index, according to Bordes de Fortage, and few copies are to be found elsewhere than in the old libraries of Gironde. Caillet is dithyrambic: "a highly documented work on the origins of the Hebrew religion and language (...) This beautiful work, which Papus used in several places in his Methodical Treatise on Occult Science for the Kabbalistic interpretation of divine names, is a formidable work of erudition and deeply initiatory in the true sense of the word. Lacour's work stands opposite that of Fabre d'Olivet, with which it can compete both by its own originality and by the richness of its documentation and the solidity of its framework." The text is illustrated with a synoptic table and 23 (out of 26) lithographed plates by the author (several concerning the cathedral of Bazas). Paperback as issued with dusty cover, spine broken in places, 3 plates missing, other minor defects. (Caillet, 5919; Dorbon, 2423; Gaita, 449).
