Its author, Maubert de Gouvert, born in Rouen in 1721, was in turn a Capuchin, a military officer, a tutor, a spy in London for Louis XV, and the director of a troupe of French comedians in Germany. He published under false addresses many pamphleteering works. Binding worn and damaged, bindings split, more headpieces, small losses of leather on bindings, cuts, corners. On the other hand, the interior is in good condition and the stitching is solid.

Chevrier's most famous work is Le Colporteur (1762). Following the scandal caused by this publication, the French government requested his extradition. He died suddenly in July 1762. It was suspected that he had been poisoned, which made the actress Sophie Arnould say on hearing of his death: "Good heavens! he will have sucked his feather". This anecdote is told by the pamphleteer Albéric Deville in his work Arnoldiana, or Sophie Arnould and her contemporaries; a selected collection of piquant anecdotes.
