107. [MEZZABARBA (Giannantonio)]. Ludovico Magno panegyricus - Lot 107
107. [MEZZABARBA (Giannantonio)]. Ludovico Magno panegyricus, imper. romanorum nummis contextus. Paris, S. Langlois, 1703. In-4, [5] f., 40 p., iv, 58 p., [1] f.v., 29 p., [1] f.v., 16 p., [1] f.v., brown basane with ornate spine. The son of the lawyer and numismatist Francesco Mezzabarba Birago (1645-1697) draws from his father's collection of medals to celebrate his veneration for Louis XIV in a trilingual Latin, French and Italian edition. It must be said that his father had been so happy with the revocation of the Edict of Nantes that he had had a medal struck in the king's image (reproduced here). The text, a masterpiece of sycophancy, has the merit of being illustrated by a beautiful and large vignette repeated three times, engraved by Franz Ertinger (ca. 1640 - ca. 1710). There is also a historiated vignette and 3 reproductions of medals used to decorate a lettering. Binding rubbed with leather chips, traces on a vignette, slight marginal stains, other minor defects.
