109. MONLUC (Blaise de). Commentaires de Messire de Montluc, - Lot 109
109. MONLUC (Blaise de). Commentaires de Messire de Montluc, Mareschal de France, où sont descrits les combats, rencontres, skirmishes, battles, sieges, assaults, escalades, prinses ou surprinses de villes et places fortes [...]. Paris, J. Gesselin, 1607, 2 volumes bound in 1 vol. in-8, [4] f., 482 p., 410 p., [19] f., fawn-colored basane with ornate smooth back (19th century binding). Published for the first time in 1592 in Bordeaux, the Memoirs of Monluc offer both a historical and political look at the Wars of Religion in the South-West and a military testimony rich in details on the strategies and the fights. Provenance : the knight Isaac de Farou (circa 1570- circa 1643), Lord of Sammarçolles, attested by his handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the last page with the mention : "completed reading on September 14th 1616". Isaac de Farou was a Protestant in Loudun and obtained the command of the castle of Talmont. He spells Sammarçolles Saint-Marcolles. Binding rubbed, corners dulled, inscriptions crossed out in the lower margin of the title page, worm bite in the inner margin of volume I with damage to a character on two leaves, clear halo at the top of about fifty leaves, other defects are minor. (Brunet, III, 1869; Graesse, IV, 693).
