121. OVIDE. The Metamorphoses in Latin, translated into French, with remarks and historical explanations by Mr. l'abbé Banier. Amsterdam, R. & J. Wetstein, & G. Smith, 1732. 2 volumes in 1 folio, [5] f., 524 p., [4] f., red morocco, spine with ornate nerves, triple filleted frame on the boards, guilloche edges, gilt edges. Ovid's text is illustrated with a frontispiece by Bernard Picart (1673-1733), a vignette to the portrait of Louis XV by Louis Fabrice Du Bourg (1693-1775), 124 engravings by Bernard Picart (but also Lebrun, Leclerc, etc.), and 3 plates outside the title page.Magnificent work" Cohen enthuses.
Binding rubbed, a few marks, corners dulled, ubiquitous foxing and a few pages quite browned, small tear in the lower margin of p. 95 without affecting the text, catalog cut pasted to the reverse of a flyleaf and other minor defects, a good copy.
