154. [Binding]. Bound in red morocco with fanfare and the ro - Lot 154
154. [Binding]. Bound in red morocco with fanfare and the royal coat of arms, L'office de la semaine sainte à l'usage de la maison du roy. Paris, J. Collombat, 1748. Gd in-8 decorated with a frontispiece, a title engraved with 3 hors texte by Humblot and numerous historiated bands and lamp-ends. Bound in red morocco decorated with a rich fanfare decoration. Spine decorated with fleur-de-lis, daisies and stars, titled. It seems to be a real fanfare binding with small irons, and not with the pendulum as it is often the case in the fanfare bindings of the eighteenth century: many small asymmetries, the two boards are not strictly similar, which adds to the charm. Abundant decoration of acanthus leaves, fleurs-de-lis, shells, flowers, dots, and small crowns in a garland frame. Arms of the royal family stamped in the center of the dishes. Guilloche cups, interior roulette, gilt edges.
These are the arms of Mesdames de France, daughters of Louis XV and Marie Leczinska. When they are stamped on red morocco, the work belonged to Madame Adélaïde. Her library was more considerable than those of her two sisters. It included more than 10,000 volumes that were dispersed at an auction during the Revolution.
