170 SABLIER (Charles). Variétés sérieuses et amusantes. Amst - Lot 170
170 SABLIER (Charles). Variétés sérieuses et amusantes. Amsterdam (Paris), Musier, 1769. 4 vol. in-12, marbled fawn calf, ornamented smooth spines, triple gilt fillet on the covers. The work is a succession of reading notes by the author, which Diderot did not find useful to publish (Oeuvres complètes, VI, 362). One reads there that the Indian priests let it be understood that a virgin could not go to paradise in order to profit themselves from this belief, that the women of Paphos were obliged one day in their life to offer themselves to the unknowns in the temple of Venus where they received a gold coin which they put in the trunk as an offering dedicated to the goddess, etc. The last volume is devoted to the Pope, Judaism and the Koran.
Bindings slightly rubbed, other defects are minor.
