178. SUE (Eugène). Les Mystères de Paris. Paris, C. Gosselin - Lot 178
178. SUE (Eugène). Les Mystères de Paris. Paris, C. Gosselin (Garnier), 1843-1844. 4 vol. gd in-8, iv, 315 p., [1] f.; 313 p., [1] f.; 319 p., [1] p., 326 p., [1] f., half red long-grained morocco with corners, spine with decorated false-nerves, gilt fillets on the spines, gilt head, original illustrated covers preserved (S. David). first edition illustrated with woodcuts in the text and 81 hors-texte compositions (47 woodcuts, 34 on steel) by H. Daumier, C. Nanteuil, E. de Beaumont, Daubigny, etc.
A fine first edition bibliophile copy in a signed binding by S. David with the grey covers of the four parts preserved. The work was published in 80 issues and was a great literary success in its time. Eugène Sue, whose objective was to depict the picturesque society of the underworld, naturally came to denounce the oppression of a privileged class on a subjugated people, and provoked through fiction a social and political debate.
Spine slightly rubbed, other defects are minor.
(Brivois, 381; Carteret, III, 569).
