First edition of this essay with a LAS by Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859). The binding is signed by Guillaume Abich (Besançon). The author intends to show by historical facts that the progress made during the reign of Louis XV is a key to understand the advent of the French Revolution. Provenance: Louis-Anne de Vaulchier du Deschaux (1780-1861), attested by his bookplate engraved by J. Neuchwander on the reverse of the upper boards. He was an infantry battalion commander in the 244th reserve regiment in Lons le Saulnier and in the 5th R. I., General Councillor of the Jura and Knight of the Legion of Honor.
