189. VIGENÈRE (Blaise). The images, or platte paintings of t - Lot 189
189. VIGENÈRE (Blaise). The images, or platte paintings of the two Philostrates, Greek sophists, and the statues of Callistrate. Paris, S. Cramoisy, 1637. In-folio, engraved t., 8 [f.], 921 p., [22] f. (table), bare boards and exposed nerves (binding without cover). The text of Philostratus' debatable translation is illustrated with 68 large, curious and spectacular intaglio engravings by Jaspar Isac, Thomas de Leu and Léonard Gaultier. Edition made on the one of Charles Cramoisy of 1609 to which plates have been added. Provenance: a member of the Pellissier de Féligonde family, attested by a handwritten bookplate on the reverse of the title page and repeated in the margin of the dedication. A copy in poor condition: leather completely missing, title page dusty, rings and fungal marks on the whole copy, small tears, a missing page 505 (part still present in the copy to be repaired), other minor defects. A working copy that is not suitable for a bibliophile. (Brunet, IV, 620; Graesse, V, 274).
