Paris, Nepveu, 1817. 2 volumes in-18, 10 colored plates, 5 of which folded, long-grained red morocco, smooth spine decorated with flowered roses and gilt fillets on the boards, gilt edges.
First edition of the French translation by Breton de la Martinière who reorganized Broughton's text originally presented as a correspondence. Collection of Nepveu's little trips.
The work is illustrated with 10 color figures illustrating costumes and traditions, hors texte engraved by T. Baxter, Atkinson or Moses after drawings by Deen Alce or Atkinson. There are copies with uncolored figures.
The Marathas are a Hindu people from Maharashtra, in western India, known for ending Mughal rule in India.
