270 BASSELIN (Olivier). Les Vaudevires, Poetry of the 15th c - Lot 270
270 BASSELIN (Olivier). Les Vaudevires, Poetry of the 15th century. With a speech on his life, and notes for the explanation of some old words. Vire, [at the expense of 10 inhabitants], 1811. Printed in Avranches by F. Lecourt. In-8, [3] f., xxxvi, 131 p., [1] f. (blank). Paperback, slightly later black paper-covered cardboard cover, old printed label pasted on the spine. Untrimmed. Rare edition published at the expense of 10 inhabitants of Vire whose names appear on the back of the title. Only 148 copies were printed on different papers, ours being one of the 48 in-8 on grape paper, a heavy weight laid paper. Olivier Basselin, born in the Val de Vire, in Normandy, around the middle of the 15th century, was the creator of the first drinking songs, the Vaudevires. Basselin attached little value to his songs and never collected them. They were passed from mouth to mouth until Jean Le Houx had them printed. The clergy had the first edition of 1576 completely destroyed. A second edition was suppressed with the same care because only two copies are known. It was printed in Vire around 1670. This 1811 edition is therefore the first one that can be found, says Gérard Oberlé. (Vicaire 69; Oberlé, Bibl. bach., 474 Brunet I, 693) Attached: COLLECTIVE. Le caveau moderne ou Le Rocher de Cancale, chansonnier de table. Paris, au Bureau du Journal de l'épicurien français, chez Capelle et Renand, 1807 - 1815. 6 volumes in-16, (from 1 to 7 without the sixth volume), bradel paper green binding of the time. Black title page and tomaison. Each volume is decorated with a frontispiece. Some scores in the text. To be complete the collection must include 11 volumes. Rare are the complete collections. The guests of the Caveau moderne were the members of the joyful society of the Rocher de Cancale, famous restaurant of the rue Montorgueil (in Paris). They were singers and literary gourmets. The society was founded by the booksellers Capelle and Renand. It counted among its members Laujon, Piis, Gouffé, Desaugiers, etc. (Vicaire, 157; Oberlé, Fastes, 1134)
