Olivier Basselin, born in the Val de Vire, in Normandy, around the middle of the 15th century, was the creator of the first drinking songs, the Vaudevires.
Basselin attached little value to his songs and never collected them. They were passed from mouth to mouth until Jean Le Houx had them printed. The clergy had the first edition of 1576 completely destroyed. A second edition was suppressed with the same care because only two copies are known. It was printed in Vire around 1670. This 1811 edition is therefore the first one that can be found, says Gérard Oberlé.
