300 VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of Libourne-Saint-Emilion. Set - Lot 300
300 VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of Libourne-Saint-Emilion. Set of 6 original pencil drawings, unsigned, attributed to the painter Eugène Vergez (1848-1926) and having been executed from life to be used for the illustration of Bordeaux and its wines by Édouard Féret, the famous guide Cocks & Féret - Château Puy-Mouton à St Christophe, M. Combret. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31,5 x 19 cm. This picturesque view of the property does not seem to have been used. The engraved view is later and shows that embellishments have been made since then. Some marginal marks, good condition.
- Château des Tours à Montagne, M. Azevédo. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31,5 x 20,5 cm. This view of the Château des Tours from the main entrance will not be used in favor of another angular view. Paper a little pale.
- Château des Tours à Montagne, M. Azevédo, by Lussac de Libourne. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 20 cm. This corner view of the castle of the towers is the one that was published, restoring all the majesty of this place today pitifully neglected.
-Château Larroque Payraud in Bonzac, M. Vallet de Payraud. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of the Laroque Peyraud castle in Bonzac was published but considerably modified by the engraver who omitted the two chimneys of the tower, eliminated the partial representation of the building on the left and failed to restore the graceful details of the building.
- Château Couperie in St. Emilion. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of Chateau Couperie in St. Emilion was engraved fairly accurately, but as talented as he was, the engraver was unable to place a fireplace or render the ornamental details. He also added a silhouette on the path to animate the scene. Numerous foxing.
- Château La Tour Figeac in St Emilion, M. Corbière. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm.
Was this view of the castle La Tour Figeac from the path of the park published? It is doubtful, and it is possible that Vergez made two sketches. If all the elements are well in place as on the engraving, including the boat moored at the same place, the engraving shows a considerable number of differences: the tree at the edge of the pond has disappeared, buildings are added on the left, a window is pierced on the folly, etc. Some foxing.
