303. VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of the Entre-deux-mers. Set of - Lot 303
303. VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of the Entre-deux-mers. Set of 8 original pencil drawings, unsigned, attributed to the painter Eugène Vergez (1848-1926) and having been executed from life to be used for the illustration of Bordeaux and its wines by Édouard Féret, the famous guide Cocks & Féret - Château du Soulat à Juillac, M. Lajonie. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31 x 20 cm. This view from the courtyard of the property was published in the Statistique. - Château Macanan in Bouliac, M. Hervouet. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31 x 24 cm, This view of the Château Macanan from the park was published in the Statistique. Paper a little dark, marginal foxing. - Château de Saujean à St-Caprais, A. Balaresque. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 20 cm. This view of the Saujean castle was published in a very faithful engraving. - Dne 173 [Chapoux] à St Antoine, M. Gravet . n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 28.5 x 20 cm. This view of the façade of the Domaine de Chapoux in Saint-Antoine-de-Queyret was published. On occasion, the engraver found it more picturesque to twist the trunk of the tree in the foreground, which is straight on the model. It is also clear from this original drawing that the slender form on the left of the engraving is in fact a may in honor of the owner. - Château Vaquey in Salleboeuf, M. Eiffel. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 29 x 21.5 cm. This view of Château Vacquey was published in a very faithful engraving but the colonnade of the west gallery is just suggested, considering the small size of the support, while it is well represented on this original. Some foxing. - Château Lamothe in St Sulpice d'Izon, Mrs Jouhanneau. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 29,5 x 23 cm. This view of the castle of Lamothe from the riverbank in Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac was published with a fairly good fidelity, the engraver placing the boat and the ducks in the exact place where Vergez depicts them. It should be noted that the artist let himself be surprised in his framing. He has therefore included a remark in the space left blank for the sky which indicates the necessary harmonious reframing that the engraver will have to execute, which he did. - Ch. du Gd Puch in St Germain du Puch, M. G. Gurchy. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of the castle of Grand Puch is not the one we know published and which is of a mediocre composition compared to the aesthetic value of this one. - Château Quantin in St Sulpice d'Izon, M. Garros. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of the Château Quantin in Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac from the park was published with the spelling Cantin (it is also spelled Quentin or Saint Quantin in the documentary sources). The engraving has considerably increased the weight of the line and removed any lightness from the building, but it could not be otherwise with the constraint of reduction.
