305. VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of the Medoc, near Margaux. Set of 4 original pencil drawings, unsigned, attributed to the painter Eugène Vergez (1848-1926) and having been executed from life to serve for the illustration of Bordeaux and its wines by Édouard Féret, the famous guide Cocks & Féret - Château Montbrun à Cantenac, M. J. Jadouin. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of the Montbrun castle from the park was published but with notable differences. The engraving takes more distance and the small tree in front of the building on the right is at the same height as its elders on the right. There is another, earlier, less successful engraving by Montbrun. Could this drawing be an intermediate sketch?
- Château Puyastruc in Blanquefort, M. de Paniagua. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm.This view of the Château de Puyastruc (or Pouyastruc) from the main alley is a remarkable pictorial testimony of the elegance of the building before the terrible fire that ravaged it. The engraving that was made of it is rather faithful but the engraver could not help but simplify the ornaments and added a silhouette near the staircase to compensate.
- Blanquefort, Château Breillan, M. de Portal. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31 x 24 cm. This view of the château Breillan was published and the engraver Léon-Louis Chapon added female and canine figures to the foreground, modified the contours of the flowerbeds and was unable to represent the detail of the architectural ornaments that had caught the artist's attention.
Paper a little dark.
- Château de Lamarque, M. de Fumel. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31 x 24 cm. This side view of the castle of Lamarque does not seem to have been published. Very dark paper.
