First edition of the first part of this famous historical essay by Dom Devienne (1728-1792), the only part published in the 18th century, illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece by Clément-Pierre Marillier (1740-1808), a plan of the Roman city, a plan of the Gallien palace, an engraving depicting the pillar of Tutelle, a portrait of Montaigne, a portrait of Montesquieu and a bird's-eye view of the city of Bordeaux, entitled: vivid pourtrait de la citée de Bourdeaux en 1560. Dom Devienne, a Benedictine of the Congregation of St. Maur, historiographer of Guyenne, was charged in 1754 by the jurats of Bordeaux to write the history of this city. The first volume was published at the expense of the Bordeaux jury, which never hurried to print volume II, which remained unpublished until 1862. Binding rubbed, headbands damaged, spines cracked.
