VERGEZ (Eugène). Châteaux in the Médoc, near Margaux. Set of - Lot 498
VERGEZ (Eugène). Châteaux in the Médoc, near Margaux. Set of 4 original, unsigned pencil drawings attributed to the painter Eugène Vergez (1848-1926) and executed from life for the illustration of Bordeaux et ses vins by Édouard Féret, the famous Cocks & Féret guide - Château Montbrun à Cantenac, M. J. Jadouin. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of Château Montbrun from the park was published, but with notable differences. The engraving is set back further, and the small tree in front of the building on the right is the same height as its predecessors on the right. There is an earlier, less successful engraving by Montbrun. Could this drawing be an intermediate sketch?
- Château Puyastruc à Blanquefort, M. de Paniagua. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm.This view of Château de Puyastruc (or Pouyastruc) from the main driveway is a remarkable pictorial testimony to the elegance of the building before the terrible fire that ravaged it. The engraving is quite faithful, but the engraver had to simplify the ornamentation and add a silhouette near the staircase to compensate.
- Blanquefort, Château Breillan, M. de Portal. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31 x 24 cm. This view of Château Breillan has been published and the engraver Léon-Louis Chapon has added female and canine figures to the foreground, modified the contours of the flowerbeds and was unable to depict the detail of the architectural ornaments that had caught the artist's attention.
Paper a little dark.
- Château de Lamarque, M. de Fumel. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 31 x 24 cm. This side view of the Château de Lamarque does not appear to have been published. Very dark paper.
