VERGEZ (Eugène). Châteaux du Sud Gironde. Set of 3 original, - Lot 500
VERGEZ (Eugène). Châteaux du Sud Gironde. Set of 3 original, unsigned pencil drawings attributed to painter Eugène Vergez (1848-1926) and executed from life to illustrate Bordeaux et ses vins by Édouard Féret, the famous Cocks & Féret guide - Château de Pomarède à Castres, M. de Coste. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 29.5 x 23 cm. This view of Château Pommarède in the Graves region from the lake was published without any betrayal on the part of the engraver, but it has to be said that the small size of the engraved support broke the charm of the original composition, in which nature, coming from the right, seems to embrace a pyramid-shaped composition. The richness of the original details restores the fullness of Pommarède's vanished little world. - Château Machorre in St Martin de Sescas, M. Couraud. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of Château Machorre in Saint-Martin-de-Sescas from the courtyard clearly put the engraver in a difficult position. The staircase no longer resembles anything, a chimney has been blown out, the shadows are too strong to cover part of the buildings, the oculi have disappeared under vegetation that is in fact non-existent, the gate has been simplified, etc. Perhaps the engraver had some second thoughts. Perhaps the engraver felt a little remorse when he set about inventing a shepherdess and her flock in the foreground. Two small brown spots. - Château Lavau à Beautiran, M. A. Lafon. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view from the vineyard of Château du Laveau (or Laveau-Haut-Callens) in Beautiran was published with fairly high fidelity on the part of the engraver. Minor brown spots.
