12. CHAMPOLLION (Jean-François, dit le jeune). Letters writt - Lot 12
12. CHAMPOLLION (Jean-François, dit le jeune). Letters written from Egypt and Nubia, in 1828 and 1829. Paris, Firmin Didot, 1833. [Bound with:] LABORDE (Alexandre de). Description des obélisques de Louqsor figurés sur les places de la Concorde et des Invalides, et précis des opérations relatives au transport d'un de ces monuments dans la capitale ; lu à la séance publique de l'Institut, du 3 août 1832. Paris, Bohaire, 1833. In-8, xv, 472 p., pl., xi, 92 p., 15 p., havana half-basin with ornate smooth spine (contemporary binding). Composite collection of three important contributions to Egyptology published in 1833. Firstly, the first posthumously published edition of letters written by Champollion during the expedition he led from 1828 to 1829, during which he received confirmation of the performance of his hieroglyphic deciphering system. The last 12 letters were unpublished, and the text is illustrated with 6 plates (the publisher announces seven in the foreword, but the sixth is doubled in the table, so the copy is complete), two of which are folded. The second work is by his brother, Jacques Joseph Champollion-Figeac, in an original edition illustrated with two large folded plates. Gay's advertisement of 120 pages and 3 plates is probably mistaken, as Hage Chahine describes it as identical to ours, and to all the copies known to us. Finally, the third work is an original edition illustrated with a full-page engraving and 3 engravings in the text. Binding a little rubbed, one quire shuffling in highlights, some foxing, other defects minor. (Gay, 1974 & 1975; Hage Chahine, 894).
