15. COURTALON (Jean-Charles). Atlas élémentaire ou l'on voit - Lot 15
15. COURTALON (Jean-Charles). Atlas élémentaire ou l'on voit sur des cartes et tableaux relatifs à l'objet l'état actuel de la constitution de l'empire d'Allemagne. Paris, Julien & Boudet, 1774. Small folio, [1] f., 20 p., 13 maps, 24 tables, marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine (29.5 x 21.5 cm).
The publisher Julien claims, at the end of Abbé Courtalon's preliminary speech, to have put only 500 copies of this luxurious atlas on sale. This atlas succeeds in providing a reasonably clear picture of the patchwork of small states, principalities, duchies, counties and free cities that made up the Holy Roman Empire in 1774, both geographically and institutionally. It consists of an engraved frontispiece title page, 20 introductory pages, 13 geographical maps and 24 analytical tables (23 numbered and one marked "supplement"), most of them folded. The maps and tables are meticulously watercolored, reflecting the publisher's high standards of precision and aesthetics.
Provenance: the library of Abel-Claude-Marie de Vichy (1740-1793), Marquis de La Borde, Baron de Sombernon et de Malins, Seigneur de Chamesson, d'Éporves et de Puits, son of Gaspard III and Marie-Diane-Camille d'Albon de Saint Marcel, attested by his armorial and engraved bookplate, pasted on the back cover.
Lack of leather on spine, headpieces worn, corners dulled, edges bared, microtear not missing at fold of general board, other minor defects.
