18. DESCARTES (René). Lettres de Mr Descartes où sont traittées les plus belles questions de la morale, physique, médecine et mathématique. Paris, C. Angot, 1657. Small in-4, [15] f., 663 p., [1] f. (errata), fawn half-basane with ornate smooth spine (19th century binding).
First French edition, which is not so common. The work contains 119 French and Latin letters. Most of them
addressed to the Queen of Sweden, Princess Palatine, Mersenne, Chanut, Le Roy and Morin. Remarkable letters shed light on Descartes' work in the fields of physics, color and light, gravity, the existence of the soul, the mobility of bodies and more. The text is illustrated with several woodcuts.
Damage to spine with missing leather, slight halo at the top of a few leaves, two passages highlighted in the margin in red pencil, other defects are minor.
(Guibert, 77).
