23. FORGEAIS (Arthur). Numismatics of the Parisian guilds. P - Lot 23
23. FORGEAIS (Arthur). Numismatics of the Parisian guilds. Plombs historiés. Paris, A. Aubry, 1874. In-8, paperback, illustrated, cover has been laminated. A reference work for numismatists, medievalists and archaeologists. Historicized lead weights from guilds of journeymen and craftsmen were found in the Seine and catalogued by Arthur Forgeais, whose store was located in the immediate vicinity of the Pont-Neuf. Forgeais played a major role in collecting, cataloguing and publishing archaeological objects, seals, coins and medals dating from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, found in the Seine when the river was dredged. A skilled painter and draftsman, he systematically reproduced the ancient objects he found. Many of the plumbs described in this book were lost in the fire at the Hôtel de Ville during the Commune. A corner of the cover is missing. Laminated cover.
