31. HUMBERT DE ROMANS. Liber Eruditionis religiosorum. Paris - Lot 31
31. HUMBERT DE ROMANS. Liber Eruditionis religiosorum. Paris, H. Estienne, 1505. In-8 gothic, 183 g., [1] f. (colophon), smooth-backed half parchment, title-pieces on spine (19th century binding).
Incomplete copy of the preliminary leaves of the Liber Eruditionis Religiosorum (Book for the Instruction of Religious), a manual intended for the training and edification of monks. It deals with various aspects of monastic life, offering practical and spiritual advice to help religious live their vocation to the full. Although the title page attributes the work to Humbert de Romans, it was actually written by the Dominican Guillaume Perault (circa 1200-1271). It is followed by Saint Anselm's "Contemplatio super vita Christi" and Saint Bonaventure's "Ordinarium vite religiose".
This was one of the very first works printed by Henri I Estienne, who was still using Gothic typeface, which he soon abandoned for the Roman typeface that was to make him famous.
Binding slightly rubbed, lacking title page and 3 preliminary leaves (text begins on folio 1 in b1), handwritten inscriptions on first and last leaves, some foxing and other minor defects.
