32. JOLY (Claude).
In-12, [11] f., 356 p., 2 folded maps, contemporary brown calf, ribbed spine decorated and titled.
Corrected second edition, and only republication of a rare work first published in 1669, when it relates a voyage made in 1647 & 1648. The Congress of Westphalia was a milestone in European history. After tedious discussions (1645-1648), this first Europe-wide peace conference led to a new political and religious balance, as Andreas Nijenhuis-Bescher explains in his article entitled Claude Joly (1607-1700) en voyage. It was in this context that the author, a canon of Paris, was called upon to accompany the Duchess of Longueville and her husband, Henri II d'Orléans, who represented France, to Munster. The canon stayed there for almost a year, describing his encounters, countries and monuments, culture, customs and interfaith relations.
Covers damaged, corners dulled. The map of Germany is missing: the binder has bound the same map of Belgium twice.
