35. LANGUET DE GERGY (Jean-Joseph). La Vie de la vénérable m - Lot 35
35. LANGUET DE GERGY (Jean-Joseph). La Vie de la vénérable mère Marguerite Marie, religieuse de la Visitation Sainte Marie, du Monastère de Paray-le-Monial en Charolois. Morte en odeur de Sainteté en 1690. Paris, vve Mazières et J.-B. Garnier, 1729. In-4, illustrated with a frontispiece, contemporary binding, brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, red mar. title-piece. First edition of the first biography of Marguerite Marie Alacoque, the Paray-le-Monial mystic who had visions of Christ, who gave her the mission of instituting the cult of the Sacred Heart. This biography was fiercely criticized by the Jansenists, which did not displease the author, who, belonging to the "party of the devout" opposed to the philosophers of the Enlightenment, was notoriously anti-Jansenist. Binding slightly rubbed, top cover acc. Some leaves browned.
