66. PLINE L'ANCIEN. C. Plinii Secundii historiae mundi libri XXXVII. Lyon, B. Honorat, 1587. In-folio, [22] f., [1] f.v., 901 p., [1] f.v., [110] f., fawn calf decorated with an oval gilt garland on the boards, ornate ribbed spine (17th century binding). Pliny's Natural History is divided into 37 books, each dealing with a specific field of knowledge: cosmology, geography, anthropology, zoology, botany, medicine, mineralogy, art, and many others. Pliny the Elder compiled this work from a wide range of sources, including Greek and Roman works, personal observations and travelers' accounts. The commentaries in this edition are by Lyon physician and botanist Jacques Daléchamps (1513 - 1588). Binding rubbed, missing and badly restored, corners dulled, leather tear at spine, some foxing and other minor defects. (Baudrier, IV, 156).
