76. STOBÉE (Jean) & GESNER (Conrad). Sententiae. Paris, - Lot 76
76. STOBÉE (Jean) & GESNER (Conrad). Sententiae. Paris, G. Cavellat, 1557. In-16, 766 p., [16] f., fawn half-basin with smooth spine, title page on spine (19th century binding).
A fully ruled copy in elegant italic typeface. An interesting compilation by Jean Stobée, in a Latin translation by Conrad Gessner, who has thus preserved many fragments of ancient texts that would otherwise have been lost.
Provenance: Philippe Louis Marc Antoine de Noailles (1752-1819), Duc de Mouchy, attested by the ex-bibliotheca dated 1806 affixed to the back cover. Other handwritten bookplates on title page with attempted erasure.
Corners dulled, jaws split, foxing on first 2 leaves, other minor defects.
(Adams, 1877).
